How Braces Work

Braces have a long history of helping people with crooked, crowded teeth, teeth with gaps between them, and teeth with overbites and other bite issues.

Brackets and wires are incredibly effective at moving teeth into the right places to give nearly anyone a perfectly aligned smile. When your teeth are straight, they make your smile look more appealing and attractive. We’ve also witnessed that straight teeth can provide a self-confidence boost to many patients. That’s a good thing.

With modern braces, a set of square or rectangular brackets are bonded to your teeth. An archwire is threaded through the brackets to connect them together. Together, they push or pull teeth where they need to go to get be better aligned with one another.

Some patients also use small rubber bands to assist in this effort.

With these braces, your teeth move in stages, each of which can take about a year or so. In the first stage, the focus is on moving the crowns of your teeth. In the second stage, the roots are repositioned.

When your teeth are where you want them to be, you will need to wear a retainer. Some people wear a temporary retainer. Other people may need to wear a retainer nightly for many years. Either way, the goal is to keep your teeth in line for the rest of your life.

But many people — particularly adults — are hesitant to wear braces for two years (or longer in some cases). They want to straighten their smiles, but the thought of wearing braces to a business meeting, a job interview, or on a date makes them hesitant to do so.

They also why Six Month Smiles could be a better option for you.

How Six Month Smiles Work

The basic of Six Month Smiles are similar to other braces.

You will have brackets placed on your teeth. We will run a wire through those brackets. This will pull or push your teeth where you want them to be.

Six Month Smiles can work more quickly because its purpose is purely cosmetic, whereas others braces are often recommended for because of their potential health benefits as well.

As a result, Six Month Smiles only focuses on moving the teeth that are the most visible when you smile. Traditional braces are used to realign all the teeth in your mouth.

The teeth in the front of your mouth also are smaller than the molars in the back. As a result, they will move more easily and more quickly.

This can drastically reduce your treatment time compared to traditional braces. When the prospect of wearing braces for two years changes to wearing them for around six months, many people are more willing to take that step.

You also should know that the brackets are ceramic. This doesn’t make them invisible, but it does make them more discreet than traditional metal brackets.

The actual treatment time can vary by a few months depending on your particular issues. However, most people can complete their treatment in about six months (thus the name).

And that’s why we know now is the time to get started if you would like to celebrate Christmas with a new smile!
