Prepare For Spring Break & A Safe Smile! [BLOG]

We hope your Spring Break plans are going well!

Dr. Perkins and our team at Jennifer Perkins, DDS in Huntsville, AL wants to spend today’s blog on some helpful tips for protecting your family’s smiles while preparing for your spring vacation!

Study Your Destination For Emergency Dental Care!

We’ve had many patients over the years who have come to us upon returning from a family vacation with a broken or cracked tooth.

It doesn’t sound risky, but the simple act of chewing can pose a threat to your teeth. Biting down on a piece of steak just the right (or wrong!) way can lead to an injured tooth.

And let’s face it. Emergency dental care isn’t easy to find, especially when you’re not familiar with the area.

So before you go, make sure you do a bit of online research of your destination and save some phone numbers of dental practices in the area that can treat dental emergencies.

Treat Troublesome Teeth Before Your Trip!

If you’re like some people, maybe you’ve already had your first dental cleaning and exam of the year by now.

During that visit, any troublesome teeth Dr. Perkins may have discovered should be treated before you leave for Spring Break vacation.

That’s because, although it’s not common, any temporary dental work can pose a problem if you plan on flying to your destination. There’s something about the changes in cabin pressure that could cause minor pain and discomfort for anyone who has had restorative treatment like dental fillings or crowns within a days or two of travel.

You can plan ahead by packing some OTC pain relievers, but to avoid problems entirely, it’s best to give yourself at least a week or more, depending on the dental procedure you had.

Another factor to consider is if you have a temporary crown. While strong, they aren’t made to work as well as permanent crowns, so it’s better to plan your vacation around the placement of your permanent crown.

Schedule A Family Check-Up!

It’s always a good idea to schedule a dental check-up for you and your family either before or after your vacation. If it’s before, we can make sure you don’t have any cavities, infections, or failing restorations so you don’t have to deal with problems during your trip.

If it’s after, a dental cleaning and exam is a great way to wash away any plaque and tartar that may build up on your teeth during those typical sweet vacation indulgences!
