David on Having his Dental Implants
I've always had bad teeth. Both my parents had dentures in their early 30s, so I just assumed that would be my progression in life. I came here. Dr. Perkins was able to just put together a plan after doing all the up-front testing, and X-rays, and all that stuff, and seeing what needed to be done. We just stuck to it. I would come back fairly regularly, get one thing done at a time. After a couple years, we got there. It's been great for me. I don't think I'm going to have to have dentures. I do have a couple crowns, I do have an implant, but everything is working well. As long as I keep up the maintenance, I think everything will be fine. It's to the point my whole family comes here now. The implant process, it's not a quick process. But in the long run, it was certainly worth it because I'm able to chew--for lack of a better way of saying it, in the back part of this side of my mouth now, which I wasn't able to do for probably a couple years because I just didn't have any teeth there to grind anything up. Now, I've got the implants in there, and they work great. I know there are lots of pains in this world, but there's not many things worse than a toothache, or something going on in your mouth that isn't right. To be able to come here and just know you're going to walk out feeling better, and with a very friendly staff whose, like I said, their number one thing is to make sure you understand what they're going to be doing, then they follow up regularly--the care that they take is certainly, to me, you can't beat it.
Benefits of Dental Implants: Look, Feel, And Function Like Your Teeth
Compared to dentures or other tooth replacement options, dental implants look, feel, and function more like your natural teeth. Among their benefits:
- We embed the implant in your jaw, so it won’t go anywhere. It can’t loosen or slip around in your mouth, and it provides a stable foundation for your restoration.
- Your surrounding teeth remain intact. Unlike with a traditional dental bridge, we won’t need to alter your adjacent teeth for a dental implant.
- Your teeth care routine won’t change. For implants with dental crowns and dental bridges, you will brush and floss, just like before.
- A dental implant stimulates your jawbone a lot like your natural tooth. This helps reduce the bone loss that can happen with a dental bridge or dentures.
If there is any possibility of discomfort with the dental implant process, we’ll numb your mouth first. And we offer dental sedation if you need it!
What Are Dental Implants, Exactly?
A dental implant is a small titanium post in your jawbone that acts as an artificial “root” for a dental crown or other restorative dentistry treatment. Dental implants can replace a single missing tooth, multiple teeth, or even all of your teeth.
There are three parts:
- The implant, or metal post
- An abutment, which connects the dental implant to your dental restoration
- The restoration that sits atop the abutment, including dentures we can attach with balls or a bar
